Personal injury attorney Joseph H. Howitt is a partner at Bernstein & Bernstein, and has worked for the firm since 1997. He concentrates his practice almost exclusively in the area of personal injury law, including car and truck accidents, slip-and-fall injuries, and dog bites, along with workers’ compensation matters.

Joe didn’t have to look far for his inspiration to join the practice of law. His father, Harvey M. Howitt, was an owner and partner in the firm. Joe saw the difference that his father, a personal injury lawyer and litigator, was able to make for his clients, and decided to follow the same path. Within months of joining the firm as an attorney, Joe was able to secure a jury verdict of over $225,000 for a personal injury victim when the defendant had offered only $5,000 in settlement. That was one of the first in Joe’s long track record of successful outcomes for his clients. In the decades since, he has resolved numerous cases for amounts in excess of $1 million.

Because he understands what a verdict or settlement means for his clients’ future security, Joe works tirelessly to achieve the best possible financial outcome for them. He also knows that personal injury cases are about more than money; behind every case is a real person whose life is affected by an injury. Joe makes it a priority to be accessible and responsive to clients, answering their questions and keeping them updated about developments in their cases. For Joe, the most satisfying thing about being a personal injury attorney is being able to help clients put their life back together after a traumatic injury.

Joe is respected in the legal community, and has been interviewed for multiple front-page articles in Michigan Lawyers Weekly Magazine. When not representing his own clients as a personal injury attorney, he has frequently served as a case evaluator for Wayne County and Macomb County Circuit Courts; he also works as an arbitrator in civil disputes involving injury or disability claims.

Joe’s commitment to justice extends beyond his work with clients and courts. He is a member and supporter of the Michigan Association for Justice and a supporter of Justice-PAC and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He is also involved with multiple organizations dedicated to the prevention of cruelty against animals.

When not working or volunteering, Joe enjoys being physically active; he is a weightlifter and a skilled tennis player who has worked with junior tournament players as well as coaching the Farmington High School girls’ varsity tennis team for eight years. Joe is also an avid musician who plays the guitar and piano.
